The Start of a Legacy
1920
Mr. E. R. Grote, founder of British Electric Lamp Limited, established an incandescent lamp factory in Wimbledon, London. The factory specialised in manufacturing unique incandescent decorative light sources.
Our Early Years
1940
Our early years were challenging, as our machinery was converted to produce components for the military.
Expansion
1960
Due to increasing business, our manufacturing plant was expanded to increase in size and capacity, achieving production of over 10 million units per annum.
Moving to Yorkshire
1980
In another important step for our business, we established a distribution centre in West Yorkshire to facilitate national next day delivery across the UK and Southern Ireland.
Continued Growth
2012
A new state-of-the-art distribution centre was established in Normanton, West Yorkshire, with another expansion to our improving facilities.
The expansion included a new Quality Control facility built on-site, with rigorous safety and life tests now performed on-site to meet requirements for stringent EU safety and performance standards.
Moving to BELL House
2023
As a business, in spite of the issues faced as a result of COVID-19, we continued to enjoy rapid growth moving into 2023. This growth culminated in our move to a new National Distribution Centre. The move to BELL House provided us with a warehouse which can accommodate 6,588 pallet locations, with over 2,100 saleable product lines and the capability to achieve 300 dispatched daily orders.
Our Sustainability Journey
2023
We achieved Carbon Neutral status in 2023. In addition to this accomplishment, we also released the circular economy focussed Firestay Geo® Sustainable Modular Downlight into our range. The product won a Build Back Better Green Award alongside the Lighting Product of the Year and the Smart Buildings/Sustainability Product of the Year at the Electrical Contracting News Awards.
Solar Panel Installation
2025
After attaining Carbon Neutral status once again in 2024, we set our sights on further sustainability goals to begin 2025. Our primary concern was the installation of solar panels at BELL House, ensuring that we reduced our energy consumption as a business. In June 2025 we installed solar panels at our National Distribution Centre, strengthening our eco-credentials in the process.
